Song Review: Holly Herndon - Chorus

This is a post that was originally on my tumblr blog. I'm posting it here for reference.

I heard this song for the first time today after days of curiosity and reluctance to listen. I had first heard of Holly Herndon after an article which lauded her music. I don’t know what I expected to hear but it took me by surprise. I first heard “Movement” whilst walking home from work one day. It was dark, and the trail was a dark bridleway off the road, next to a seldom-used railway line, and under pitch black tunnel. The music, I found, was divisive and made me feel uncomfortable and cold while I expected warmth.
It was with these thoughts swirling around I gave “Chorus” a chance. Again, I was taken aback by the aggressiveness of the music which is somehow softened by the warm vocal samples. The technique reminds me of Crystal Castles but I cannot help but feel it is more intelligent sounding. This is IDM if I have ever heard it. The build-up to the chorus, if you can call it that, is slow but I can honestly say that the chorus is a very lovely moment in the song. I prefer this song to anything in “Movement”, but maybe after hearing this I will give “Movement” another go.

Jukai no Tsuki

Today I will be reviewing Japanese folk artist lela's second mini-album entitled Jukai no Tsuki (Moon of the Sea of Trees). lela was born in 1986 (exact date unreleased) and hails from the northernmost island of Japan: Hokkaido. In an interview in 2009, lela stated that due to her being unable to communicate with other people she compose music to express herself. She suffers from anthrophobia and is signed to Sony Music Entertainment (SME).

Apologies

Hello! I'm sorry for not updating this blog more often, but starting next week I'm going to start a project which will last the entire year (hopefully) in which I will listen to an album I've never heard before and review it! Wish me look and I hope you'll check back weekly as I will definitely update every starting next week!

I have a general idea of what to review at first, but feel free to recommend to me your favourite albums!

Yours faithfully, Joel

DOROTHY

Hello, I'm back with my second review! Again I'll be reviewing another album by the artist Chihiro Onitsuka.
Dorothy is Onitsuka's fifth album and was released by Universal Sigma on 28 October, 2009. Although Chihiro stated the album title has no meaning, the theme of this album is most definitely stories.
